Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth, as opposed to congenital or genetic brain disorders. ABIs can result from a variety of causes, including traumatic events like falls, car accidents, or sports injuries, and non-traumatic events such as strokes, infections, tumours, or exposure to toxic substances. The effects of an ABI can vary widely, depending on the severity and location of the injury, and may include physical impairments, cognitive deficits, emotional and behavioural changes, and challenges with communication and daily activities
All types of Brain Injuries will vary significantly from person to person. The presenting symptoms are dependent on the location and the extent of the damage. The individual may exhibit physical and sensory problems. These problems may affect their movement, balance, co-ordination and muscle tightness.
