Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of neurological disorders that affect movement, muscle tone, and posture. It is caused by damage to the developing brain, often before birth, during delivery, or shortly after. The symptoms of CP can vary widely, ranging from mild to severe, and may include muscle stiffness or floppiness, involuntary movements, difficulty with balance and coordination, and challenges with motor skills. CP is a lifelong condition, but its symptoms can be managed with therapies, medications, and sometimes surgical interventions to improve quality of life and functional abilities.

It is the most common physical disability in childhood and CP is an umbrella term for a group of conditions. Symptoms vary greatly from child to child and one side or more of the body can be affected.

Adults living with CP can benefit from physiotherapy to maximise their abilities and minimise the impact of age-related changes.
