Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects the brain and spinal cord by damaging the myelin sheath that protects nerves. This occurs because the immune system mistakenly attacks it.

MS can cause various symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Vision problems
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Muscle spasms, stiffness, and weakness
  • Mobility issues
  • Pain
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Speech and swallowing difficulties
  • Cognitive challenges

There are three main types of MS:

  1. Relapse Remitting: Symptoms come and go, partially or completely resolving.
  2. Secondary Progressive: Initially relapsing MS that progresses to ongoing disability without relapses.
  3. Primary Progressive: 10-15% of MS cases, where disability steadily worsens without early relapses.

Besides medication, individuals with MS may benefit from:

  • Exercise
  • Physiotherapy
  • Dietary changes
  • Complementary and alternative therapies
