Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive condition caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. It has a gradual onset with symptoms varying among individuals. Early signs often include a loss of smell. The main symptoms are:
  • Loss of smell
  • Tremor
  • Slowness of movement (Bradykinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness (Rigidity)
PD involves both motor (physical) and non-motor (cognitive) symptoms. Motor symptoms include:
  • Tremor
  • Slow walking
  • Reduced facial expressions
  • Difficulty with tasks like writing and sitting to standing
  • Stiffness
  • Muscle spasms

Non-motor symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Memory loss
  • Central pain
  • Bladder issues
  • Speech changes
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Constipation

Diagnosis is based on observing these symptoms, as there is no specific test for PD. Early diagnosis can be challenging, so a GP may refer to a neurologist or geriatrician for further evaluation.

At LV Rehabilitation, we offer specialist programmes for PD. Alongside that we have a supportive Parkinson’s community for newly diagnosed individuals and those living with the condition for years. This community also supports partners and carers, organizing walks, pub meet-ups, and more.
