Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury (SCI) results from damage to the nerves in the spinal cord, which sends messages to and from the brain and is protected by a bony structure. Damage to the spinal cord interrupts these signals and can occur from physical trauma, such as a road traffic accident or fall, or from non-traumatic causes like infections or tumours.

SCI can affect all four limbs and the trunk (Tetraplegia or Quadriplegia) or two limbs and/or the trunk (Paraplegia), depending on the injury level.

It can be classified as complete or incomplete, with incomplete injuries retaining some function below the injury level.
An SCI can impact muscle strength, sensation, and autonomic functions. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation plays a vital role in helping those with a SCI. It helps improve muscle strength, physical abilities, wheelchair skills and even return to sport.
